Our Everywhere God
“’Am I only a God nearby,’ declares the LORD, ‘and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ declares the LORD. ‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?’ declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 23:23-24
It is impossible to hide from God. Many have tried to do so throughout the centuries. People like Adam and Eve, Jonah, and even Moses have tried to hide from God’s presence. Others, like Joseph’s brothers, have tried to hide their sin from the LORD. Impossible. It just cannot be done.
In Jeremiah God reminds His people of this truth. He is both nearby and far away. He fills the heavens and He fills the earth. Where else could man hide? Nowhere! As you are reading this, God is with you. And He is also in rural China, war-torn Iraq, hostile Pakistan, and “closed” North Korea. With God, there are no restricted borders.
In a world filled with injustice, where greed and idolatry seem to reign, it is increasingly important that we believe and cling to the truth of God’s omnipresence. No act of hate, selfishness, greed or injustice escapes God’s sight. He sees every need, hears every cry and counts every tear. Nothing surprises Him. And while He does not cause sin, everything that He allows can be used for our good and His glory if our lives are surrendered to Him.
You will come in contact with a variety of people this week – all with different backgrounds, problems and situations. Many are possibly suffering silently, even though they may not ever say so. Maybe it’s a troubled marriage, a house close to foreclosure, a disobedient or wayward child, a hidden addiction…the list goes on and on. We never know what someone else is struggling with in life. That makes it all the more important that we magnify and exalt Christ in every situation and conversation. God has a way of using us when we don’t even know it.
The key is to abide in Christ…remain connected to Him through fellowship in His Word, prayer, service, and community with other believers. Only then can we discern the voice of God through His Spirit. He knows and sees what we cannot. And He can speak to, draw, and love others through our lives. God might just use you to show someone who desperately needs Him how close He really is.
Dear Father, I am so thankful that Your presence fills every corner of my life. It is such a privilege to know You. Please use me to draw people to You. May Your presence be evident through my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
